Mythology rests at the heart of human existence, and it could be argued that the arts have been developed by us through the ages to enshrine the prevailing stories of our time. Myths and legends often eulogise actual events, feats or traits (while never letting the Truth get in the way of a good story).
We live in a time where, even as science debunks the central myths that have held together communities in their beliefs, we are no nearer to solving the unfathomability of consciousness and existence, nor to having a universally shared story. In Myths, Martyrs, Monsters & Masterpieces we have assembled a collection of works by South African artists who wrestle with how to distil the central stories and questions of our time, or reimagine and repurpose avatars from another time. Whether invoking awe, bathos, fantasy or curiosity, all of the works here invite contemplation of the sacred, and present a starting point for us to interrogate our own sense of the numinous.
