GALLERY ASSISTANT (FULL-TIME)
Everard Read Franschhoek are looking for a driven, creative and highly organised Gallery Assistant to join our team.
The Gallery Assistant will be responsible for sales and a wide range of administrative duties to ensure the smooth and efficient day-to-day running of the gallery. They will also be required to assist with junior curating and design as well as artwork photography, managing of social media and our website.
The ideal candidate will have experience working in a commercial gallery or similar environment, and a passion for administrative excellence as well as art. The applicant should be highly motivated, a quick learner and have excellent English written and verbal communication skills in order to deal with our clients and artists.
The candidate must be able to work two weekends a month.
Position details:
Full time: 5 days a week (includes two weekends a month, and public holidays as rostered) Normal working hours are: 09:30 – 17:00
Proposed start date: Mid/late April 2026

Address: We have two galleries in Franschhoek and the candidate will work between both galleries (20 Huguenot Road & Everard Read at Leeu Estates).

Candidate Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art, Art History, Design or similar field
- Own transport
- Highly computer literate (Microsoft Suite)
- Confident in photography
- Proficiency in Adobe Suite – in particular Lightroom & Photoshop
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- A self-starter with the ability to problem solve effectively
- Ability to prioritize and juggle multiple tasks
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- The ability to work 2 weekends a month, and public holidays as scheduled.
OVERVIEW OF POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Junior Design/ Curation
- Artwork photography
- Editing of photographs (Lightroom)
- Assist with social media managing & content creation
- Assist with exhibition curation and administration
- Management of our website
Sales, Reception & Marketing Responsibilities:
- Welcome visitors to the gallery, answer the phone and direct calls.
- Provide information to clients – biography/ portfolio/price list.
- Process payment and generate invoices for sold artworks
- Schedule and manage the logistics of client deliveries
- Assist with responses to the Everard Read Franschhoek mailbox
- Update gallery client database on a regular basis
- Assist with gallery marketing and communication activities including e-mails, invitations and portfolios for each exhibition
- Manage RSVP’s & exhibition guest list
General Administration
- Assist with the management of our Artist Residency programme
- Ensure our google drive is up to date
- Update artist biographies
- Ensuring Authenticity Certificates are done for each outgoing artwork
- Regular liaison with staff from the Everard Read partner galleries regarding available stock
- Condition checking and documenting incoming and outgoing artworks
- Ensure the gallery is immaculate at all times; ensure the gallery is stocked with all cleaning materials & arrange for maintenance work as and when needed.
- Ensure the kitchen and storeroom are well supplied and kept tidy and easy to navigate at all times
