PRESS RELEASE
ODYSSEY
Oct 20 – Nov 6, 2020
ODYSSEY | EVERARD READ | 20 OCT – 6 NOV 2020
The Everard Read galleries are proud to present Odyssey, an exhibition showcasing fresh examples by many of the galleries’ top artists. The collection invites dialogue between iconic works by these artists, who employ different media and devices, be it allegory, metaphor or satire, to convey their distinctive views of history, politics and spirit.
Originating in Greek oral literature, ‘odyssey’ as a term refers to a protracted voyage, characterised by changes of fortune. The artists here explore myth and monster, the call of the unknown, and the passage of humankind through history – with its challenges, many still borne today.
An odyssey is equally a spiritual quest. We see artists depicting this journey towards self-understanding, each such work drawing on deeply personal anxieties as the artists question our place in the world, both social and natural.
These journeys of discovery provide us with the opportunity, as 2020 draws to a close, to both look back and face into the future. We can see how far we have come on our own various odysseys, and grasp the possibility of continuing forward.
Five percent of sales will be going to Art Angels, and will be split between the Click Foundation and the Everard Read/Art Angels bursary fund, in support of students at the Ruth Prowse School of Art in Cape Town.
