The concept for this show is to have representatives of the various series I work in. Some series have their roots in works as far back as 2003, and all of them exhibit my life-long investigation-explorations-experimentations-alchemising-play and findings into the MATTER, materially and philosophically.
Music, music industry, recorded sound, is fundamental to my life. Bodies of works often feel like music albums to me. Most of the titles are song titles. Therefore, I naturally loved Lulu Read’s (Everard Read Franschhoek curator) naming this body of work as ‘Greatest Hits’.
Working in series affords me an ongoing distillation of specific technique/s and subject matter; difference emerging out of repetition. I take a break from a series by working with another, sometimes a series needs to rest for a while. Sometimes I need a rest from it, for a while.
When I step back from the various series I do notice a kind of multiple personality, hence the show title. I have worked under various aliases in the past. There's a correlation between the various series and the various personalities I have running about within me. Mark Splendid, Maria, Miriam, Larry, etc; personalities of the multiple. Somehow they agree to a cohesive manageability.
Although this show is a solo, I hope it looks more like a group show; paying homage to various identities within me.
