In this wonderful and glowing exhibition, Caryn Scrimgeour has surpassed herself with a group of nine superb paintings that are the result of a year of intensely focused work. Days in the studio that begin long before dawn and end when her hand is too cramped to hold a brush, layer upon layer of oil glazes, literally millions of tiny brush strokes, a hundred or more small handmade brushes worn out, and the endless painting and repainting of hundreds of objects seemingly artlessly placed but each one having meaning and a relationship to the others around it.
With these works, Scrimgeour shows us that not only is she an artist working unsurpassed in technique but that, at the height of her very formidable powers, she is one of our great contemporary painters.
Although her materials and techniques owe more to great painters of the past, her works are firmly rooted in the present. Whilst they shimmer and coruscate like altar cloths or Fabergé devotional objects, they owe more to Freud than they share with traditional compositions. They are painted with no plan or end in sight and their stream of consciousness has less in common with the Pre-Raphaelites than the writings of Joyce or Woolf or the paintings of Twombly or Rothko. - Trent Read
