Passionate about drawing from an early age, Sasha Hartslief is largely self-taught. Hartslief’s subjects are often viewed from a philosophical, deeply personal perspective, resulting in paintings that are emotionally charged, pensive in mood and considered in composition.

“This show reflects my interest in using windows and doorways as a device to isolate moments of daily life, in order to really focus on the beauty of fleeting, intimate, seemingly insignificant experiences. By looking in from the outside, through layers of patterned reflection, a moment can become frozen in time and take on a new significance and atmosphere.

All of this has allowed me to investigate my ongoing fascination with light, in all its manifestations, from the dim light of dusk to the glare of midday sunshine. In an attempt to further lay bare the atmosphere and mood of the moment, l have also become increasingly interested in simplifying my compositions, and removing any noise, so that l am left with the light and the clear form of the composition.

Finally, this show has been a celebration of all the strong and vibrant women and girls in my family, so it has been an opportunity for me to really focus on the aspect of the feminine as it manifests in daily, domestic life.” – Sasha Hartslief, 2023
