ARTIST STATEMENT:

'Since I began making art as my profession 40 years ago, I have always referred to my work environment (open air or studio spaces) as ‘my magic garden’. 

I often describe my working process as a ‘dream reality’, as it is a process that resembles dreaming; unplanned and surreal images emerge into a story. Although, in the process of painting, one transitions from the total freedom of mark-making to a logical approach, making decisions around colour, perspective and balance to create a visually enticing outcome, be it two or three-dimensional (depending on the medium). This process acts as a personal therapy for me that ideally, by the time the work is completed, can be cathartic for the viewer too. A kind of muti. A kind of magic. 

I seek to attain a spiritual beauty in my art as in a garden, where beautiful things grow. Living in a world of such brutality and ugliness, it is my job to find happiness and beauty in a real sense, because for each degree of negativity, there is a balance of positivity. 

So, I look forward to harvesting and sharing my Magic Garden produce with you at Everard Read at Leeu Estates in Franschhoek on the 15th April 2023.'
