SETLAMORAGO MASHILO - NEGOTIATING THE CROSSROADS
Everard Read Franschhoek is proud to present a new body of work by Setlamorago Mashilo: Negotiating the Crossroads. This new body of work was made during his residency at Everard Read at Leeu Estates in 2021.
The land holds within it a rich treasury of the histories of the men and women who have long occupied it. Dispossession of the land is also the severing of the history of the people.
The Sepedi proverb goes “go gola ke go lebantsha mahlo le mahlomola” which loosely translated is – 'to grow up is to bear witness to hardships.' How then should I approach the promised land, to not let these seeds fall into fallow ground? The poet Keorapetse Kgositsile warns, "there is no such thing as escape/ sanctuary in life, where all things come to pass."
